Urdiales Estudio de Arquitectura created an outdoor entertainment area on the southern edge of Macas, Ecuador. The scheme repurposes a sizable urban lot previously employed for fishing and livestock, turning it into a casual venue that merges recreation with agricultural uses.
The design works around an existing structure, turning a functional water reservoir tank into a social hub. They repurposed the tank into a fully functioning bar, complete with storage, water access, and a fridge. The bar’s design incorporates these functional elements, making it a central part of the social hub.
The bar’s weathered exterior was left untouched, preserving its natural rust and raw, textured look. A wooden pergola connects the bar to a sunken conversation pit, creating a sheltered zone that ties everything together. This pergola helps to define the different areas of the outdoor space.
The conversation pit is wrapped in a timber deck, forming a lowered seating area that encourages people to gather and stay awhile. As the sun sets, LED lighting brings the space to life, highlighting both the seating area and the bar. This lighting adds to the ambiance of the space, making it suitable for a variety of activities.
The layout of the pavilion shows how each element connects, balancing reuse, material contrast, and open-air design. Urdiales Estudio de Arquitectura’s project demonstrates how an overlooked structure can be turned into something entirely new without losing its original character. The pavilion’s design is a prime example of this approach.
By working with what was already on site, the design avoids unnecessary waste while creating a space that feels both practical and inviting. The result is an atmosphere that shifts from casual daytime use to a more ambient evening setting, perfect for hosting everything from small family moments to larger gatherings. Urdiales Estudio de Arquitectura achieved this by carefully considering the existing structure and its potential for reuse.
The project’s focus on reuse and material contrast is evident in its design. The combination of the weathered bar, wooden pergola, and timber deck creates a unique and inviting atmosphere. This approach to design allows the space to feel connected to its surroundings while still providing a functional and comfortable area for socializing.
