James Blunt has spent his life moving between military postings, boarding schools, and now, a string of international properties. The singer and television personality currently splits his time between three continents, maintaining homes in London, Ibiza, and Switzerland.
A Military Childhood and a Windmill
Blunt was born in Tidworth, Hampshire, into a military family. His father served as a Colonel and helicopter pilot, forcing the family to relocate frequently. During his early years, Blunt lived in England, Cyprus, and Germany as his father’s postings took them across Europe.
One of the most distinct stops in his youth was a five-storey Georgian windmill on the north Norfolk coast. The Cley Windmill, dating back to 1819, overlooks the marshes of Cley next the Sea. The mill had belonged to the Blount family since the 1930s. When Blunt’s grandfather died in 1979, the property passed to his parents, who eventually sold it in the summer of 2024 for £2.65 million.
After attending boarding school in Berkshire and Harrow School, Blunt studied sociology at the University of Bristol before joining the Army. He was deployed to Kosovo in 1999 as part of a NATO mission. He left the military in 2002 to pursue music in Los Angeles, where he briefly lived with actress Carrie Fisher while working on his debut album.
London and Chelsea
Blunt returned to London to establish his music career, living in a small flat in west London. The capital remained central to his life, connecting him with industry figures and business interests. He now resides in Chelsea, a neighborhood he has called home for over 14 years.

In addition to his private residence, Blunt is a familiar face in the area. He owns two historic pubs: The Fox & Pheasant in Chelsea and The Carpenter’s Arms in Hammersmith. He acquired these establishments to protect them from property developers, ensuring they remained open for the local community.
Seasonal Moves to Ibiza and Switzerland
Blunt purchased his first property in Ibiza in 2006. The island has been a significant part of his life for nearly two decades. In 2024, L’Officiel Ibiza published a feature on his 150-year-old hilltop villa. The home features whitewashed finca walls, carved Moroccan-style mirrors, and sunlight-flooded doorways.
Inside the villa, Blunt reportedly created a basement bar with a neon sign that reads, “Blunty’s Nightclub: Where Everybody’s Beautiful.” He has been a vocal supporter of environmental campaigns on the island. In 2023, he told the Guardian, “I love living in Ibiza. I hope to die here. Hopefully not yet.”
For the winter months, Blunt maintains a chalet in Verbier, Switzerland. He bought the property in 2007, drawn to the resort’s location for skiing and nature. This pattern of seasonal living has defined his routine in recent years.
Blunt married Sofia Wellesley in 2014, and the couple has two children. In a 2024 interview with GQ, he described himself as a nomad. He explained that he enjoys moving between different locations depending on the season and his work commitments.
