West Yorkshire Homes Use Farm-Style Garage Roofs - farm style roofs

A residential scheme in West Yorkshire illustrates how precise material choices can satisfy strict planning regulations while preserving the rural feel of a former dairy farm, especially for ancillary structures such as garage roofs, and it demonstrates a thoughtful balance between contemporary building needs and the historic character of the site.

Design aligned with agricultural heritage

Planning officials required every new element to echo the site’s farming past, insisting that the visual language of any addition remain consistent with the agricultural context. Consequently, the ancillary structures adopted a straightforward silhouette, featured timber cladding, and used a roof profile that recalls classic farm outbuildings rather than adopting a modern residential style.

The design team selected a bituminous sheet solution that mirrors the familiar shape of traditional agricultural roofs, thereby satisfying both visual expectations and functional demands without compromising durability.

Material choice and construction efficiency

Onduline Classic green corrugated bitumen sheets were installed on the five standalone blocks that serve the 11-unit development. The subdued hue helps the structures blend into surrounding fields, reinforcing the impression of traditional farm buildings and ensuring that the new elements do not dominate the environment.

“From a planning and design perspective, it was important that the garage buildings felt like a natural extension of the site’s agricultural heritage,” said Jack Holroyd, director at Holroyd Homes.

The sheets are lightweight, supplied in 2-metre lengths and contain 50% recycled fibres. Their ease of handling accelerated installation across the multiple blocks, keeping the overall programme on schedule. Widespread availability and proven durability also reassured the contractor about long-term performance, and the recycled content contributed to the project’s sustainability goals.
